We share private conversations, photos, videos, and important documents on the popular messaging platform WhatsApp. Therefore, maintaining strong account privacy is crucial. WhatsApp offers specific security features that you can enable to make your chats and account more secure. Here are three such settings that you should enable immediately.
Enable Chat Lock
Even if someone else knows your phone’s passcode, you can keep specific private chats separately secured. WhatsApp’s ‘Chat Lock’ feature moves selected chats into a separate locked folder. You can also hide message details within the notifications for these chats. To enable this, open the specific chat you wish to secure, go to the profile or chat info section, and select the ‘Chat Lock’ option.
Enable Two-Step Verification
Two-Step Verification is one of the most essential settings for securing your WhatsApp account. Once enabled, a 6-digit PIN is required whenever you register your WhatsApp account on a new device. To activate it, go to Settings > Account > Two-step verification and set your PIN. It is also advisable to add an email address so that the account can be easily recovered if you forget the PIN.
Enable End-to-End Encrypted Backup
While standard WhatsApp chats are protected by end-to-end encryption, chat backups stored on Google Drive or iCloud might not be. Therefore, enabling ‘End-to-end encrypted backup’ is important. You can activate this by going to Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup. You can then secure the backup using a password or a 64-digit encryption key.
Please note that no setting can make chats 100% ‘leak-proof.’ If someone else gets hold of your unlocked phone, or if you share screenshots or messages with others yourself, these settings cannot prevent that. Therefore, you should continue to use a strong screen lock on your phone, the ‘Privacy Checkup’ feature in WhatsApp, and the latest security updates for the app.
Messages, calls, and chats on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted, meaning no third party can access them—only the sender and the recipient can. This is precisely why the risk of chat leaks is highest on the devices of the two parties involved in the conversation.
