Today, a large number of people use UPI i.e. Google Pay, PhonePe and other such apps for payment. On Friday, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) users faced problems in making payments in large numbers, as a large number of payments were failing. Complaints of payment failure and delay in transactions started coming from users on social media platform X, especially on third party apps. The problem started at 11:26 am and reached its peak by 11:41 am, when more than 222 users lodged their complaints on Downdetector. Downdetector is a service that monitors real-time outages.
According to Downdetector, many users lodged complaints about problems in digital payments in apps including PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm and others. Downdetector showed that 76 percent of users faced problems in making payments, 23 percent could not transfer funds. No information has been revealed yet about the cause of the outage. According to reports, the number of complaints rose to 1,168 by noon, of which 96 were related to Google Pay and 23 to Paytm.
What NPCI said
Responding to the outage, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said on X, “NPCI is currently facing an intermittent technical issue, which is partially reducing UPI transactions. We are working to resolve this issue and will keep you updated. We apologize for the inconvenience caused.”
Sixth major UPI outage in the last one year
This is the sixth major UPI outage in the last one year. Earlier on March 26, UPI services were down for about three hours, which affected both consumers and merchants. This is the second time in the last ten days that UPI users have faced problems in digital payments. On April 2, many users complained about the inability to make UPI payments on digital platforms like Google Pay, Paytm, PhonePe, etc.
Earlier this week on April 8, NPCI also issued a notice to limit the use of QR codes for international UPI transactions, citing the need for better payer identification. Domestic UPI QR payments will remain unaffected by this change.
