You will no longer be able to use ChatGPT on WhatsApp. OpenAI’s ChatGPT service was discontinued on WhatsApp on Thursday (January 15). This artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot will no longer work on Meta’s platform. The deadline was set for October 2025, when WhatsApp announced in an updated policy that it would ban all large language model (LLM)-based chatbots from the platform. While the company cited increased server load as the reason, many suspected it was related to the low usage of the company’s in-house chatbot, Meta AI.

The AI chatbot has stopped working on WhatsApp.

On a support page for the ChatGPT phone number, OpenAI stated, “On January 15, 2026, ChatGPT will no longer be available on WhatsApp. ChatGPT will remain available on iOS, Android, and the web.” The company also suggested that users link their accounts to save their conversation history, otherwise the conversations will not be transferred.

The service is now completely shut down. Sending a text to ChatGPT on WhatsApp now results in a message stating that it is no longer available and that users should download the app to continue using the service. All other access points, such as the website and the desktop app for Mac, are still working normally. Besides ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft’s Copilot are also available on WhatsApp, and they will likely face the same fate soon.

WhatsApp updated its policy

This deactivation comes a few months after WhatsApp updated its Business Application Programming Interface (API) policy to prevent large language model AI bots and other “machine learning technologies” from accessing WhatsApp Business. Meta also reserves the right to determine what constitutes an AI chatbot and what does not. The policy states, “If we believe you have violated these restrictions, we may suspend your account and terminate your access.”

The service was launched in December.

Notably, OpenAI first launched its WhatsApp service after releasing a dedicated ChatGPT phone number (1-800-CHATGPT or 1-800-242-8478) in December 2024. Over the next few months, the AI giant added new capabilities, such as support for voice and image input. Later, it also added AI-powered image generation to the WhatsApp service.
