WhatsApp Username Feature: WhatsApp is working on a ‘username’ feature for its users. This feature will allow people to initiate conversations with others without needing to share their mobile phone numbers. To use this, a user will need to select a unique username, which they can then share with others. The government has expressed concerns that if people are able to connect solely via usernames, some might exploit this to create fake identities for fraudulent purposes. Consequently, discussions regarding the rollout of this new WhatsApp feature have resurfaced.

What is the WhatsApp Username feature?

Currently, to start a conversation on WhatsApp with someone whose number is not saved in your phone, you generally need their mobile number. With the introduction of the username feature, users will be able to create a distinct identity for themselves. According to WhatsApp, the username feature will be optional—meaning it is not mandatory for everyone to use. Those who prefer not to create a username can continue using WhatsApp via their phone number, just as they do now. This feature could be particularly useful for individuals who conduct business online or for those who wish to avoid sharing their personal phone number when interacting with new people.

Identification via Username Instead of Mobile Number

The primary benefit of this feature relates to privacy. Currently, to initiate a conversation with someone you don’t know on WhatsApp, you must share your mobile number. Note, however, that a mobile number will still be required to create a WhatsApp account. People who already have your number will continue to be able to contact you using that same number.

Why the Indian Government Has Concerns About This Feature

The Indian government has expressed concerns regarding the potential for fake identities and online fraud stemming from WhatsApp’s ‘username’ feature. According to a Reuters report, in July 2026, the government requested information from WhatsApp regarding how the feature functions and what security measures are in place. Furthermore, the government advised that the rollout of this feature in India be paused until consultations are concluded. It should be noted, however, that these risks do not imply that every user of the username feature will fall victim to fraud; the actual level of risk will depend on the robustness of the security measures and the degree of caution exercised by users.

Security Measures Outlined by WhatsApp

WhatsApp has detailed several security measures for its username feature. According to the company, a user must know the exact username of the person they intend to message for the first time. The company has also stated that specific safeguards have been implemented to prevent the impersonation of celebrities, government entities, and other prominent figures. Nevertheless, as with any online service, users should remain vigilant regarding messages from unknown individuals, suspicious links, or requests for money. The mere fact that a username resembles the name of an acquaintance or an organisation does not guarantee that the identity is authentic.
