WhatsApp is continuously introducing new features for its users. In this series, a new feature has now started rolling out. WABetaInfo reported last month that WhatsApp was developing a group calling feature for its web clients. This feature allows users to make calls without installing the desktop app. This feature supports both voice and video calling. The company’s feature is currently in the development phase to ensure a bug-free experience for users upon official release. The good news is that this feature has started rolling out to some users, and they can now make calls directly from individual chats while using WhatsApp on their browser.

WABetaInfo shared screenshots

WABetaInfo shared a screenshot of this feature in an X (formerly Twitter) post. The shared screenshot shows that the feature is now available for some web clients. The company had been working on this feature for about a year. In the initial stage, the company is offering voice and video calling for individual chats to web clients. There is no need to install the desktop app for this. According to the report, users need to open the chat and tap the call button to make a call.

Protected by end-to-end encryption

Importantly, calls made through WhatsApp Web are protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring that users’ privacy is not compromised. According to the WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp Web calls will also support screen sharing, allowing users to share their screen in real time. To use this feature, the user must be in an active video call.

This WhatsApp feature is quite useful for Linux users because the company does not offer a desktop app for Linux. It’s worth noting that the company is currently offering this feature to users who have registered for the WhatsApp Web beta program. The company will roll out this feature to more users in the coming days. Additionally, the group calling feature will soon be available to users without requiring a desktop app.
