If you feel your smartphone battery is draining much faster than expected after using Instagram, you are not alone. Since early 2026, a large number of Android and iPhone users have been complaining about Instagram’s battery drain issue. The primary culprit is a feature that keeps Instagram active in the background even after you close the app. The good news is that you can mitigate this battery drain by tweaking a few simple settings.

Instagram is currently one of the most resource-intensive apps. While you watch Reels, Stories, and videos, the app continuously downloads new content, processes video, and refreshes the feed. This places a direct load on the processor, display, and internet connection, leading to increased battery consumption.

Instagram Keeps Running in the Background

The problem worsens because Instagram continues to operate in the background even after the app is closed. It constantly checks for notifications, syncs new posts and messages, and refreshes content. Users are often unaware of this, yet the battery continues to drain in the background.

If you check your phone’s battery usage report, you may notice Instagram consuming power even during hours when you haven’t even opened the app. This is why background activity is considered the leading cause of battery drain.

Stop Background Activity Immediately

The easiest way to reduce battery consumption caused by Instagram is to limit its background activity.

Android users should go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Battery and select the option to Restrict or Limit background activity.
iPhone users should go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn off this feature for Instagram.
Doing this prevents Instagram from refreshing content in the background when you aren’t using it, thereby saving battery life; the impact of this change will be immediate.

Enable Data Saver Mode

Additionally, Instagram includes a built-in Data Saver feature. Typically, the app pre-loads videos and high-quality media to ensure smooth scrolling. However, this process consumes extra battery power and mobile data.

To enable Data Saver, open Instagram, navigate to Settings and Privacy > Data Usage and Media Quality, and turn on the Data Saver option.
This reduces the pre-loading of videos and media, lowers network activity, and decreases battery consumption.

Keeping the app updated is also important

Rapid battery drain is often caused by software bugs. Instagram has previously encountered such bugs that caused abnormal battery consumption on Android phones; these issues were subsequently resolved through updates. Ensure that you have the latest version of Instagram installed on your phone, as new updates frequently include battery optimization and performance improvements.
